The overpopulation of cats and dogs in Modoc County is a problem which affects everyone in our community.
The problem continues to grow, and with it comes an increase in animal suffering. The more stray cats and dogs trying to survive on their own means that more disease will run through the colonies. Some of the animals who come to us are ill and must be treated. Animal overpopulation is a public health concern also. When we have many stray animals, they may bite someone in fear or panic, thus possibly causing infection.
There are more animals in Modoc County than homes. Many of our dogs and cats are
transferred to shelters in Klamath Falls, Medford, and even Portland.

Consider that in the year 2000, of 313 dogs taken in by Alturas Animal Control,
only 95 were reclaimed or adopted. These numbers have remained fairly
constant over the past three years, and indicate that we have a serious
problem on our hands. Since Animal Control does not take in cats, these
figures do not even address the problem of cat overpopulation, which
is as bad as, if not worse than, the dog overpopulation problem.
There are far more dogs and cats needing homes in Modoc County
than there are families willing and able to adopt. This situation can
and must be remedied. With your help, it will be.
