ANIMAL SHELTER PROGRESS "sort of"

The Modoc Cpounty Planning Commission considered a request from HPHS for a use permit to build an animal shelter on 3.4 acres it has leased from Modoc County on Nov. 21. In the end, the planners continued the HPHS request for a use permit to build the shelter, asking for more details about how HPHS proposed to mitigate the noise from the dogs in the shelter."We were baffled and concerned by some of the untruths the Planning Commission was told, about our efforts to build a 20 dog animal kennel," said Emilie Martin, president. "So we cleared up a lot of details and agreed to get a list of materials that will decrease the amount of noise that comes from the shelter to the one resident that lives within one-half mile of the shelter," Martin explained.

THRIFT STORE REORGANIZED

STORE HOURS: WED.-FRI: 1PM-5PM, SAT: 10AM-3PM

For better conveniance our store has been reorganized. We have gently used items as well as new items available. New pet supply items such as chew toys and leashes as well as small animal carriers. We also have halloween stuff including animal costumes and door coverings. Animals available for adoption are at the store on Saturdays.

HPHS received a grant from PetSmart to spay or neuter 200 feral or free roaming cats. It will still cost you $25 to fix a female cat and $12 to fix a male cat. Whomever brings in the cat is expected to pay for the shots for the cat and to feed the cat once it is returned from whence it was found.

This is called TNR and is a program that is used around the county. In return for the low fee for fixing the cat, the person who has rescued it, or is feeding it, is expected to put it back in the same place it was found and feed it, or the group of cats called a colony. This way the cat population remains stable and healthy, but their is no reproduction.

Dick and Marsha Schalk from Portland, Oregon, just adopted Nickie, the 9-year-old Brittany spaniel being fostered by HPHS. Congratulations to the new family.

The newest addition to our foster animals is little Hope, a Thoroughbred/Appaloosa cross. Her mother was rescued only three weeks ago from a horrible situation.  Cassie is a 25 year old Thoroughbred mare whom the veterinarians discovered to be pregnant and due to deliver within the month.   Both are currently doing well with Kim Weimann.    By summer, Cassie should look much healthier.

PROGRESS ON OUR SHELTER!

OUR GOAL OF HIGH PLATEAU HUMANE SOCIETY  IS TO BUILD AN ANIMAL SHELTER CAPABLE OF HOUSING UP TO 40 CATS AND DOGS UNTIL THEY ARE ADOPTED OR TRANSFERRED TO SHELTERS IN URBAN AREAS.

The Modoc County Board of Supervisors has leased 3 acres to High Plateau Humane Society  on County Road 60, just below the waste transfer station.  The land has water, but fencing and a septic system will have to be provided by HPHS.     Members of HPHS have formed committees to work on the shelter project:   fund-raising, and recruiting more volunteers.  HPHS is looking for a volunteer contractor, as well as others willing to put their experience and equipment into the "shelter-raising."

OUR VOLUNTEERS

Past HPHS president, Sue Rutledge has been volunteering for animals for many years.  While she raises and trains show quality collies, she also has a great deal of empathy for the mutts of the world and for homeless cats.  She has taken in many foster dogs and cats through the years, and is always there at HPHS events to help raise money for animals welfare.

Ellen Carey, of Carey's Gooming,  is the founder of HPHS's Adopt-a-Pet Day.  She takes in foster animals and spends a lot of her precious spare time volunteering.

Susan Schliesser and Judy Ford transport animals, among many other things they do for HPHS.  Kim Weimann is the cat coordinator.  Jessica Lowden, Cody Weimann, and Jessie Holloway are our young helpers.  Ron Sharpless pays the bills.  Ed and Ann Fass coordinate the yard sale during Pet Days, along with other volunteering.  Audrey Cloud keeps the HPHS scrapbook.  Brenda Carpenter found insurance coverage for HPHS and whenever volunteers are needed at an event, HPHS can always count on Vera Visnowski, Donna Johnson, and Louisa Wistos.  Kathy Wooley and her "boys" have been a great help.  Lynda Demsher takes excellent photos of our pets needing new homes and forwards them on to our webmaster.  Emilie Martin, is, of course, our hardworking president who coordinates most of all this.  Marie Neer keeps up the website.

SUCCESS STORY

Meet Heather Salazar and Oreo.  In February Heather  adopted Oreo, then a sickly, weak, six week old kitten full of ear mites; Oreo would have been put down had she not been adopted.  Heather took her in, nursed her back to health, and now Oreo is a healthy, playful, and beautiful cat who brings Heather mice in gratitude.

PETFINDERS

Our adoptable pets are also featured on www.Petfinder.org.

There is an $85 adoption fee for dogs, $50 for cats. This fee covers spaying and neutering costs, medical expenses, feeding, caring for and advertising the availability of the animals in our care.
