| "Jack" McCombs was born in Alturas on April 27, 1930. He went through school in Modoc and graduated from Modoc High School. He was an excellent source of information regarding Modoc history.
Jack was a member of the California Highway Patrol from 1962 to 1989, spending the last years of his career in Modoc County.
Animals in general, and dogs in particular, were an important part of Jack's life. He had three Chow dogs, King Tut being the last one. He also had Pokie, who was his devoted Border Collie mix and his faithful companion for 12 years. He also had two cats for the same period of time.
A number of years ago Jack had a pet raven named Mickey for two years or more, until he apparently followed another CHP patrol car out of town and couldn't find his way back. Mickey was known for following the patrol car when Jack was on duty.
Jack was exceptionally sensitive to any and all animals and that's why the Humane Society was near and dear to his heart during his lifetime, and after.
He would be proud of the good work his gift is making possible in Modoc, in a town he cared about. |
