About High Plateau Humane Society
High Plateau Humane Society is a non-profit organization, which relies on donations and support from the public. We are unpaid volunteers. Donations made to the Society are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We can now accept your kind donations using PAYPAL which allows you to use a credit card or ATM card.
You may also use a more traditional form method by clicking mouse here . Either way, any donation will be appreciated and put to good use. Thank you.

Our goal is to improve the quality of life for animals in Modoc County through:

  • Educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals.
  • Reduce animal overpopulation and homelessness.
  • Build a shelter to house animals until they are adopted or transferred to a larger,"no kill" facility.

HPHS News Release

April 21, 2008

Contact: Lynda Demsher, 233-1958

Have you ever dreamed of being a fashion designer? Now’s your chance to get creative using local thrift store finds to put together a recycled outfit to model in the High Plateau Humane Society’s Funky Fashion Show/Luncheon coming up Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Federated Church in Alturas. Have fun and help Modoc County’s homeless animals as well.

HPHS’s Critters and Crafts Thrift Store, the Big Saver’s Thrift Shop, the What Not and other local outlets all have a large selection of good used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing that can be recreARTed into original designer clothing rivaling some of the creations coming out of today’s design schools. In fact, the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design offers a fashion contest for its students with the requirements that they use thrift store finds and spend no more than $20 to create an outfit.

HPHS has had donated dozens of brand-new formals in a variety of sizes that would make an excellent start for elegant evening wear. There are also pants, tops, skirts, scarves, shirts, jeans, dresses, bags and hats and even a wig or two available in the local stores that, with a tuck here and there, some fabric paint, stencils and glitter, a sash or scarf, and some big, chunky jewelry or even duct tape, could be the next trendy look. However, this fashion show isn’t just about trends – it’s about fun too, so those with a sense of humor are invited to compete for the title, “Funniest Outfit in Town.”

Pets, however, are not part of this event, but you are invited to bring a picture of your dressed-up pal if you wish. Rules for the fashion show are simple – get something from a local thrift store, use your imagination to jazz it up, accessorize with thrift-shop retro or invent something on your own, show up at the Federated Church (behind the Courthouse – 307 E. 1st Street in Alturas) for the fashion show at 11 a.m. and don’t be shy about modeling your creation.

There will be prizes of course. Categories are for Best Design, Funniest Outfit, Cutest Little Kid, Best Guy’s Outfit, and Most Likely to Start a New Trend. Everyone who pays to enter will receive something. Pictures of all entrants will be taken at the show at no cost. Those interested in entering can stop by HPHS’s thrift store at 330 N. Main Street in Alturas to browse and a friendly volunteer will be available Wednesday-Friday 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help you find just what you want. Big Saver’s will give entrants half-off anything bought at that store for the fashion show.

Jan Savage will direct the preparation for the luncheon, featuring French dip sandwiches. In addition to the thinly sliced prime rib on sandwich rolls served with au jus, there will be a variety of salads offered, other side items, and dessert. Those attending are invited to dress up in thrift store finds as well, even if they don’t enter the fashion show – after all, recycling is good for the environment, as well as your pocketbook.

Tickets are available at the Critters and Crafts shop for $8 for the luncheon and $5 to enter the Funky Fashions contest. For more information, call HPHS at 233-9277. All proceeds go toward HPHS’s animal programs including low-cost spay/neutering, rescuing and fostering adoptable animals, and the shelter fund.
