About High Plateau Humane Society
High Plateau Humane Society is a non-profit organization, which relies on donations and support
from the public. We are unpaid volunteers. Donations made to the Society are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
-
Our goal is to improve the quality of life for animals in Modoc County through:
- Educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment
of animals.
- Reduce animal overpopulation and homelessness.
- Build a shelter to house animals until they are adopted or transferred to a larger,"no kill" facility.

Shelter Update
HPHS is still working on options for a shelter site since the Centerville Road land Modoc County offered as an alternative to the three acres on County Road 60 near the transfer station was revealed as a rock pile and former dum p during a perk test. We lost some time, said HPHS President Emilie Martin, “but we are working to acquire a suitable site.” She said the county planning department and city public works de partment have been working closely with HPHS to find a suitable location. The County Road 60 pro perty was a good s pot, but neighbors objected to having a shelter there because of the potential for noise, even though HPHS had submitted plans for a building that would minimize noise. The alternative site, a beautiful stretch of ground about half-way between the city limits and the turn to County Road 60, was too rocky for a se ptic system, so HPHS board members and city and county staff have been scouring the Alturas area for other possibilities. HPHS has received two grants that increased the building fund. |
Foster Homes Needed
If you are willing to foster a dog or cat until it is ado pted or trans ported to a shelter, call HPHS to find out more. Fostering is a satisfying way to hel p homeless animals make the transition to a new home. Until HPHS gets a shelter to house dogs and cats in Modoc County, foster homes are the only places they can be kept.
More foster homes are needed to kee p u p with the increasing number of animals that HPHS rescues. If you would like to learn more about fostering, sto p by the Second Chance Thrift Store when it is o pen and talk to someone with fostering ex perience for a personal orientation. |
Second Chance Thrift Store
Thanks to everyone who hel ped move the thrift store from Main Street to 110 East First Street, diagonally across from the Courthouse in Alturas. The new location is brighter and, once all the shelving is u p, will have a nicer dis play of the items so generously donated by HPHS members, su p porters, and the community. Volunteers at the store are always looking for ideas to im prove the arrangement of items for sale. Stop in, and give us your ideas.
Second Chance .Thrift Store Hours: Wed. 1 to 5 p.m. .. Thursday 9 am to 5 pm
Friday, 9 am to 5 pm ... Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm
Cat Condos and toys HP 74 Ink Cartridge Clean, gently used items to sell.
If someone could take the 9 to 1 shift on Wed. it could be open Wed. morning, also
We display cats and kittens to the store each Friday and they are joined by dogs on Saturdays, although we can’t, and don’t want to, kee p animals there overnight. Plans are to create a more permanent animal dis play by moving the animal pens to the front corner of the store and extend the items for sale into the back. |
The store is managed and staffed by HPHS volunteers who generously donate their time to making it a success. Since the move, the store has been breaking even and earning a little extra for animal ex penses. Volunteers are needed for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday am and to serve as substitutes.

MISTER CAT
From March through September, Mister lived with the High PlateauHumane Society. First, as their shop cat at the Main Street thrift store and then in the garage of a foster home. People walking down Main Street early in the morning would see Mister curled up at the front window - just waiting for a dog to walk by so he could lunge at it.
Mister loves people, but was not kind to other dogs or cats. All the time he was with HPHS, he was looking for that special someone who would understand his ups and his downs, his need for attention and his dislike of other cats, who at one time most likely beat on him.
Mister found a new home with Jerry Moore, a kind gentleman who has no other animals at his two story, renovated barn in the Sacramento area. He needed a big cat to take on the mice that threatened to filter into his upstairs home from the shop below. And Mister needed a place where no cats or dogs would provide him an opportunity to fight and where he could amble up for a scratch on the head and a kind word from an nderstanding person.
Thanks to all who helped Mister make the transition from a cat locked in a house for 10 days with four other cats and no food or water to the happy, purring, funny, independent guy he became. Good luck in your new home, Mister.
Mister's story started out rather bleak, but with time and patience it has a happy ending.
